Russian Forces Enlist Crimean Youth in Military Training and Drone Operations

Молодь Криму проходить підготовку в армії та освоює нові технології безпілотників.

Children Drawn into Militarization in Occupied Crimea

In the Russian-occupied region of Crimea, minors are increasingly being involved in activities resembling military training. This includes instruction on operating drones, handling small arms, and participating in events alongside Russian military personnel. The education system is being transformed as military themes permeate various aspects of children's lives, reflecting a broader campaign by the occupying authorities to indoctrinate Ukrainian youth living under occupation.

The use of military equipment, identical to that employed by Russian forces in the ongoing war against Ukraine, has become integrated into school programs. In late October, Sevastopol hosted a regional drone operator competition under the movement 'Dviženiya Pervikh' and the drone racing federation, featuring approximately 50 students aged 7 to 18. Participants receive hands-on training with real drones and simulators using Russian military gear. Additionally, schools conduct lessons on firearms handling, disassembling Kalashnikov rifles, and performing military drills.

Patriotic Military Events and Their Impact

Military-patriotic quests involving veterans of the Ukraine conflict have become routine. Students are compelled to learn songs from Russian propagandist artists. The occupation administration actively promotes contract service in drone forces, recruits personnel for Russian security agencies, and appoints war veterans to lead occupation administrations. Memorial plaques honoring fallen Russian soldiers have been installed in Crimean schools, signaling a deliberate erasure of Ukrainian national identity in the occupied territories.

Russian occupiers also relocate Ukrainian children from occupied areas under the pretense of 'cultural trips' and fund programs aimed at their ideological re-education. Many children have been forced to participate in military-patriotic training, sing the Russian national anthem, and follow the Russian school curriculum, actions that violate international humanitarian law. The Kremlin plans to fully militarize youth education programs by 2026, incorporating combat training into health and educational activities.

According to Ukraine's Defense Ministry Intelligence Directorate, 'the aggressor state Russia is creating an environment in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine where military technology and war participation become a routine part of childhood.'

The situation in Crimea exemplifies a systematic Russian policy aimed at the militarization of Ukrainian children, directly contravening international standards and children's rights. These measures risk long-term damage to future generations, fostering an ideology of hostility and normalizing military technology in daily life, which threatens not only Ukrainian national identity but also regional stability.
