Moscow Orders Capture of Stepnohirsk by End of June

Захоплення Степногірська планується завершити до початку літа

Battlefield Update: Zaporizhzhia Region

Russian commanders have tasked units from the 7th Airborne Assault Division with seizing the village of Stepnohirsk in the Zaporizhzhia region by the end of June, according to Vladyslav Voloshyn, spokesperson for the Southern Defense Forces, in a statement to Ukrinform. In addition, occupying forces continue attempts to advance on the Huliaipole axis, with orders to capture the settlements of Huliaipilske and Verkhnia Tersa by the end of May. Notably, deadlines for this objective have already been postponed several times. This area has seen consistent fighting as both sides vie for control of key positions in southern Ukraine.

Russian troops are making heavy use of aviation and guided bombs, with up to 25 airstrikes and around 100 guided bombs recorded daily. The frequency of kamikaze drone attacks is also increasing, particularly with Molniya and Lancet unmanned aerial vehicles. The enemy is funneling additional forces toward the Orikhiv direction, including units from:

  • airborne troops
  • motorized rifle formations
  • special operations forces
  • TOS-1A Solntsepyok heavy flamethrower systems

Heightened Russian activity is evident along the front near Stepnohirsk, Plavni, and Prymorske. However, Ukrainian defenders have managed to seize the tactical initiative in these areas. Meanwhile, the settlement of Zapsillia in the Sumy region remains fully under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov attempted to justify the occupying army's failed efforts to capture the Donetsk region, claiming that Moscow supposedly wants to avoid causing excessive damage to territories where Russians live.

The front-line situation in the Zaporizhzhia region remains tense, with intensified combat operations by Russian forces. Yet Ukrainian troops continue to demonstrate their ability to hold strategic positions. Statements from Russian officials about operational constraints may indicate difficulties faced by the occupation army, as well as possible shifts in battlefield tactics. How events unfold in this zone will be critically important to the overall trajectory of the conflict.

As the situation in the Zaporizhzhia region escalates, the ongoing military actions have prompted Ukrainian forces to respond decisively. Recent reports indicate that they have launched strikes on Russian targets even as far as the Caspian Sea, showcasing their ability to project power across a broader front.
