Russia Deploys Elite Units Southward in Response to Ukrainian Counteroffensives

Зміцнення військових сил Росії на півдні у відповідь на контрнаступ України.

Frontline Situation

In response to recent Ukrainian defensive successes in the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions, Russian military command has redeployed elite airborne and naval infantry units to the southern sector. These forces, previously positioned near Pokrovsk and Dobropillia, include the 76th Guards Air Assault Division, a unit implicated in the occupation of Bucha in March 2022. This redeployment highlights the pressure Russian forces are under from Ukrainian operations. The American think tank, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), reports these units are now actively engaged in countering Ukrainian attacks that began in late January and early February 2026. The monitoring project DeepState has confirmed these shifts in Russian troop dispositions.

Ukrainian Military Actions

Ukrainian defenders, for their part, are conducting active operations along the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk oblast border. Fighting continues in the settlement of Berezove, and clearing operations are underway. The Ukrainian army is executing search-and-strike missions across a front section encompassing several key locations:

  • Kalynivske
  • Novomykolaivka
  • Novohryhorivka
  • Krasnohirske
  • Pervomaiske
  • Rybne
  • Solodke

In a coordinated effort, units of the Main Intelligence Directorate and Ukraine's Defense Forces successfully halted a Russian advance toward Zaporizhzhia. This complex special defense operation lasted three months, demonstrating the sustained activity and strategic planning of Ukrainian forces in the ongoing conflict. The southern front remains a critical and highly active theater in the war.

These developments signal a shift in frontline dynamics, with Ukrainian forces maintaining active counterattacks while Russia scrambles to reposition its elite formations. The effectiveness of Ukrainian military strategy, as seen in these successful operations, could significantly influence the future course of the conflict and the balance of power in the region.
