Russia's Support for the New President of Venezuela
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation expressed support for the new acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez. This support came against the backdrop of accusations made by the US against former president Nicolas Maduro for criminal charges related to drug trafficking and terrorism.
Delcy Rodriguez, who recently took on the duties of president, took the oath under the presidency of parliamentary speaker Jorge Rodriguez. At the same time, Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were brought to court in New York on January 5. Maduro is accused of criminal cases related to drug trafficking and terrorist activities. The charges against him were filed in absentia back in March 2020.
“We wish Acting President Delcy Rodriguez success in addressing the tasks facing the Bolivarian Republic,” - Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also emphasized that “we consistently advocate for de-escalation of the current situation and for resolving any existing issues through constructive dialogue and respect for international legal norms.”
Impact on International Relations
This situation surrounding Venezuela reflects not only internal political challenges but also international relations, where Russia and the US hold opposing positions. The unfolding events could have significant consequences for Venezuela's political stability and its relations with the outside world.
In the context of escalating political tensions and international sanctions, support from Russia may become an important factor in the further development of events in the country.
