Russia’s Secret Blueprint for Supplying Drones to Iran

A confidential document from Russia’s GRU military intelligence reveals that Moscow intended to provide Iran with thousands of advanced drones and train Iranian personnel to target American troops in the Persian Gulf. The plan involved equipping Tehran with 5,000 short-range drones controlled via fiber-optic cables—technology that makes them extremely difficult to detect or jam with electronic warfare systems. Additionally, Russia proposed transferring long-range drones equipped with Starlink satellite guidance.

Moscow’s Serious Intentions

The document includes detailed diagrams and a map of Iran’s coastline, underscoring the seriousness of Russia’s ambitions. The plan was likely drafted early in the full-scale war, when Moscow feared a potential U.S. amphibious assault to seize the oil terminal on Kharg Island. To operate the drones, Russia suggested recruiting Iranian students studying at Russian universities, as well as loyalists from Tajikistan and Syrian Alawites aligned with Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

This is the first concrete evidence of Russia’s willingness to supply Iran with cutting-edge weapons on a large scale to inflict losses on U.S. and allied forces. It remains unclear whether the proposal was fully executed. U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dan Caine has acknowledged that Russia is taking steps to assist Iran’s military in countering American presence in the Middle East, stating:

“There’s certainly some action there.”

The revelation highlights the deepening military partnership between Russia and Iran, which could significantly alter regional security dynamics. The transfer of drones and combat training would enhance Iran’s offensive capabilities, potentially triggering renewed tensions in the Persian Gulf. The United States is expected to closely monitor these developments as it reassesses its military posture in the region.

The implications of drone warfare are becoming increasingly significant, as evidenced by Ukraine's ambitions to produce over 7 million drones annually. This shift in military strategy underscores a broader trend where nations are enhancing their aerial capabilities to counter threats.
