In 2026, there has been a notable increase in attacks involving jet-powered Shahed drones targeting Ukraine's critical infrastructure. In response to this escalation, new unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been introduced: the Geran-5, built on a cruise missile design, and the V2U kamikaze drone, which is equipped with artificial intelligence powered by an Nvidia Jetson Orin processor. Notably, the Geran now contains a higher proportion of Russian-made components, while roughly 50% of its electronics come from China and Taiwan. Most of the V2U's components are dual-use.

Analysis of the New UAVs

When examining these new UAVs, it is worth noting that there is also a Geran-4 model, which boasts superior flight performance and a more powerful turbojet engine. The Shahed-Geran drones have seen an increased share of components manufactured in Russia, though the majority of their electronics still originate from Western countries. The most common UAV remains the Geran-2, a copy of Iran's Shahed-136.

The V2U kamikaze drone is very compact, yet it is capable of autonomously searching for, identifying, and striking targets—including those beyond the horizon. Oleksandr Zaruba, an expert in military technology, comments:
