Russian Drone Strikes Ukraine's National Children's Library in Kyiv, Part of a Wider Assault on Culture

Атака безпілотника на Національну дитячу бібліотеку України у Києві: загроза культурній спадщині.

National Children's Library of Ukraine Targeted in Kyiv Attack

A Russian drone strike has damaged the building of the National Children's Library of Ukraine in Kyiv. The assault resulted in significant harm to the facility, including:

  • Damage to 10 window units;
  • Destruction of balcony doors;
  • Localized harm to the foundation;
  • Cracks in the walls;
  • Defects to the interior decor.

The damage extended to the service areas for the library's youngest readers. Cracks were also found in the library's shelter, a space that had been renovated just last year with support from the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Ukraine. This attack is a stark example of the war's impact on civilian and educational infrastructure.

Systematic Destruction of Ukraine's Cultural Heritage

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian forces have destroyed or damaged over 850 libraries across Ukraine. In the overnight attack on February 5, 2026, which struck four districts of Kyiv, the Solomianskyi district sustained the most severe damage. By September 25, 2025, the Russian aggression had led to the destruction or damage of 1,599 cultural heritage monuments and 2,415 cultural infrastructure objects throughout the country.

These losses are spread across 18 regions and 326 territorial communities. Of the 1,599 damaged cultural heritage monuments:

  • 149 are of national significance;
  • 1,300 are of local significance;
  • 150 are newly discovered objects.

These figures reveal the devastating scale of the assault on Ukraine's cultural identity and public institutions. The targeting of libraries and cultural sites not only destroys physical history but also severely restricts access to education and information, particularly for children and young people. The preservation and urgent restoration of these institutions remain a critical challenge amid the ongoing conflict.
