Russia Cancels Victory Day Parades in Crimea and Voronezh While Threatening a Strike on Kyiv

Під час святкувань у Криму та Воронежі скасували військові марші, водночас погрожуючи ударами по Києву.

No Military Parades in Crimea or Voronezh This Year

Russia has announced a ceasefire with Ukraine for May 8–9, yet simultaneously threatened a massive missile attack on central Kyiv. Meanwhile, military parades celebrating Victory Day on May 9 have been canceled in Crimea and Voronezh. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that a silent regime in Ukraine would take effect from midnight on May 5.

Sergei Aksyonov, head of the occupation administration in Crimea, confirmed that no traditional festive events would be held in the region.

“No military parade or other mass events for Victory Day are planned in the Republic of Crimea this year. The organized 'Immortal Regiment' march will also not take place. This decision by the authorities is driven by security considerations,” Aksyonov noted.
He added that measures would still be taken to honor the memory of the fallen and veterans.

Frontline Situation

On the night of May 5, Russian forces attacked the Poltava region with missiles and drones. Attacks were also recorded in the Kyiv region, affecting residents of the Brovary and Vyshhorod districts. These actions come amid discussions of a brief ceasefire for May 9, a topic raised during a phone call between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov reported that the ceasefire idea gained public traction following that conversation.

As a result, Victory Day celebrations in several regions will face significant restrictions, while the frontline remains tense.

The cancellation of military parades in Crimea and Voronezh highlights growing security concerns amid the ongoing conflict. At the same time, the announced ceasefire for May 8–9, though intended to reduce violence, is undercut by Russian threats. These developments suggest both sides are trying to save face in a complex frontline situation where any action could have serious consequences for civilians. It is also worth noting that the ceasefire discussions at the highest diplomatic level may indicate ongoing efforts, but the reality of combat operations remains difficult.

As tensions continue to escalate, the implications of the proposed ceasefire highlight the complexities of the ongoing conflict.
