Russia Establishes New Military Branch, Building Its Drone Corps Around Volunteer Units

«Росія формує новий військовий підрозділ, створюючи корпус безпілотників на основі добровольчих загонів»

Formation of the Unmanned Systems Troops

The Russian Ministry of Defense has established a new, dedicated branch of its armed forces focused on unmanned systems. The core of this new branch is the Rubicon Center for Advanced Drone Technology, which was formed in August 2024. During its creation, Rubicon integrated existing volunteer formations, notably the Doomsday and Doomsday Night units. Officially, the new branch, named the Unmanned Systems Troops, was deployed in 2025.

The Significance of Drone Technology

According to a report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) dated April 13, 2026, Russia's Defense Ministry integrated ready-made personnel from these volunteer units into the Rubicon Center. In December 2024, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov announced the creation of the separate military branch, underscoring the critical importance of drone technology in modern warfare strategy. This move reflects a global trend where drones have become central to battlefield tactics and reconnaissance.

The Rubicon Center has been designated as a flagship formation, highlighting its leading role in developing unmanned systems. The Defense Ministry also plans to open its own military academy to train specialists in this field by 2027. This indicates a serious, long-term commitment to implementing cutting-edge technology and enhancing the operational effectiveness of drone forces.

Therefore, the establishment of a dedicated military branch centered on drone technology represents a significant step in modernizing the Russian armed forces, aimed at fully integrating advanced systems into military operations.

This development points to the growing recognition of the decisive role unmanned technologies play in military conflicts and command operations. The creation of the Unmanned Systems Troops could substantially alter approaches to warfare, as drones become increasingly vital assets for modern armies. In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, Russia is seeking not just to keep pace but to gain a competitive edge in this domain, a development with potential implications for the global military balance.

In light of the recent advancements in drone technology and the establishment of the Unmanned Systems Troops, it is noteworthy that Russia is also focusing on training the younger generation in this field. The initiative of training children to operate combat drones reflects a broader strategy to integrate unmanned systems into military operations, ensuring a future-ready force that leverages cutting-edge technologies in warfare.
