Attacks on Kyiv and the Surrounding Region

On June 15 and 20, 2023, the Kyiv region and the city of Kyiv came under assault, leaving several people injured and damaging key architectural landmarks. The number of casualties from the strike on the Kyiv region has climbed to four, according to Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration. In the Vyshhorod district, three residents were wounded: one man suffered burns to his hands and legs along with a shrapnel fracture to his leg; a woman sustained shrapnel injuries to her hands and face, as well as bruises to her thigh and shin; another woman was diagnosed with a concussion. All victims were taken to a local hospital.

On June 20, Russia launched drone strikes on the Kyiv region, hitting the Boryspil district. A 40-year-old man was hospitalized due to poisoning from combustion byproducts. Earlier, on June 15, Kyiv experienced its heaviest blow when a strike hit the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. A direct impact on this UNESCO World Heritage site triggered a fire, setting the roof of the Dormition Cathedral ablaze. Sacred relics and liturgical items from the monastery were successfully evacuated.

Official Statements and Aftermath

The Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church issued an official statement regarding the overnight strike on the Dormition Cathedral, in which the religious organization merely acknowledged the destruction without condemning Russia’s actions. The cathedral will be restored, according to Yulia Svyrydenko. The Church of the Saviour at Berestove resumed operations for visitors starting June 17.

The ongoing attacks on Kyiv and its region continue to alarm both residents and local authorities, as the consequences threaten not only physical infrastructure but also the morale of the population. Damage to culturally significant sites like the Dormition Cathedral endangers Ukraine's heritage. At the same time, the provision of medical aid to the injured highlights the healthcare system's readiness to respond to emergencies, which could prove vital in preserving lives and health during crises.

The recent attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra has raised concerns not only about the immediate damage but also about the extensive restoration efforts required. Experts estimate that it will take over 10 days to cover the roof of the Dormition Cathedral following the strike.
