Russia's Psychological Pressure on Ukraine's Civilian Population

Andriy Yusov, a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine's Ministry of Defense and an advisor to the head of the Presidential Office, stated at the Security Architecture forum that Moscow is leveraging the threat of massive strikes and the uncertainty surrounding declared ceasefires as a tool for psychological coercion against Ukrainian citizens. He noted that while Ukrainians respond appropriately to these threats, the enemy may deliberately delay attacks to heighten the pressure on the public.

Yusov addressed questions regarding the so-called Trinity Sunday ceasefire and the possibility of missile strikes during the holiday period. He remarked:

“People prepared for shelling, and they were right to do so. We have not had any drill alerts since the start of the full-scale invasion.” — Andriy Yusov

According to him, Russia may display readiness to launch strikes, then postpone or reschedule them—a deliberate tactic used by the adversary. 'Showing readiness to shell, then delaying, postponing—it is clear that this is the enemy's tactic,' he emphasized.

Frontline Situation and Impact on Civilians

Yusov also pointed out that combining military action with psychological pressure on Ukrainians, who have been living under wartime conditions for over four years, is a key element of the enemy's strategy. 'This burden is also an element of pressure that the enemy uses,' he said. He urged civilians to take air raid warnings seriously and be prepared to respond to them.

The situation in Ukraine remains tense, as the country's security services and military brace for every potential attack. Intelligence agencies continue to gather information and share it with the nation's military and political leadership. On Trinity Sunday, May 31, Russia struck a Nova Poshta terminal building, causing a fire that engulfed the warehouse and destroyed or damaged commercial and private vehicles in the company's internal parking lot.

This incident highlights the ongoing conflict and Russia's use of psychological methods to influence Ukrainian society. Threats of massive attacks and uncertainty about ceasefires create an atmosphere of anxiety, which can affect the population's morale. The primary goal of such actions is to sustain pressure on civilians, eroding their sense of security and undermining their support for Ukrainian forces in the fight for independence.

As the situation unfolds, understanding the timing behind Russia's planned strikes becomes crucial for grasping the full scope of psychological warfare employed against Ukrainians. Insights into the advance preparation for these attacks can shed light on the tactics used by Moscow to maintain pressure on civilians, emphasizing the need for vigilance and readiness among the population.
