Introducing the Geran-5: A New Class of Attack Drone
Russia is field-testing a new type of attack drone designed to counter Ukrainian interceptors. According to Serhiy Flesh Beskrestnov, a radio technology expert and advisor to Ukraine's Minister of Defense, a serial-production unmanned aerial vehicle called the Geran-5 has appeared in southern Ukraine. This aircraft represents Moscow's latest attempt to develop an effective countermeasure against Ukrainian anti-drone systems and mobile fire teams.
Technical Specifications of the Geran-5
The Geran-5 is a low-cost jet-powered drone that relies on analog video transmission operating at 3.3 GHz. It has a flight range of up to 100 kilometers, with strikes recorded at distances of 30–40 kilometers from the front line. Its cruising speed reaches 260 km/h, with a maximum speed of 300 km/h. The warhead weighs between 4 and 5 kilograms.
Beskrestnov noted that 'the enemy is trying to use cheap jet-powered UAVs as a countermeasure against anti-drone systems and mobile fire groups.' He urged personnel to pay close attention to the video format, document all such cases, and seek out captured examples to better understand the guidance and control systems.
A sharp increase in attacks involving jet-powered Shahed-type drones is expected by 2026, signaling an escalation in Russian operations in this area. Built on a cruise missile platform, the Geran-5 introduces new tactical capabilities to the battlefield.
