Russia spent over $4 billion on Iranian weapons: what the aggressor country has bought

Росія інвестувала більше 4 мільярдів доларів в озброєння з Ірану: які військові ресурси отримує агресор.

Military cooperation between Russia and Iran

According to information, since the end of 2021, Russia has spent over $4 billion on the purchase of Iranian military equipment, including ballistic missiles, drones, and ammunition. These expenses highlight the strengthening partnership between the countries. Approximately $2.7 billion of this amount was spent on contracts signed in October 2021. Under these agreements, Russia received:

  • hundreds of Fath-360 ballistic missiles;
  • 500 other ballistic missiles;
  • 200 anti-aircraft missiles.

In addition, at the beginning of 2023, a separate contract worth $1.75 billion was signed. An important element of cooperation has been the production of drones, specifically a drone called 'Geran-2'. This drone is about 6 meters long and has a wingspan of up to 5.5 meters. It is also worth noting that in January 2025, an agreement on strategic partnership between Russia and Iran was signed.

An important aspect of this cooperation is that over half of the enterprises of 'Uralvagonzavod' are not subject to sanctions. Among them, 41 enterprises are part of the Russian state corporation Rostec. These facts indicate the active development of military cooperation between Russia and Iran, which may have significant implications for regional security.

Impact on regional security

The strengthening of military cooperation between Russia and Iran indicates deep strategic ties that could affect the balance of power in the region. Spending on military equipment, as well as signed contracts, may lead to increased military activity from both countries, which, in turn, may be observed in the context of their relations with Western states. This situation requires close attention from the international community, as potential military supplies could exacerbate conflicts in the region.
