Trilateral Talks Between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States
Russia has officially declared that further trilateral negotiations with the United States and Ukraine are meaningless. The reason cited is Kyiv's refusal to pull back its Armed Forces from the portion of Donbas still under Ukrainian control. This statement came from Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, who stressed that Moscow's condition for a ceasefire hinges on the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops.
According to Ushakov,
“trying to convince one another is largely a waste of time.”He noted that talks lack purpose if there are no likely steps forthcoming from Ukraine. In response to Russia's demands, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reaffirmed Kyiv's stance: refusing to retreat from territory held by Ukrainian forces and rejecting any recognition of occupied areas. During the Bucha Summit in late March, Zelenskyy also raised questions about Russia's objectives.
Current State of Negotiations
The negotiation process hit a dead end after the Geneva round in February 2026, leading to the suspension of trilateral talks. According to Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Security Studies at the National Security and Defense Council, Russia is actively preparing for a spring-summer campaign that could escalate the conflict. Moscow's position remains unchanged: it considers Donbas Russian territory and insists it must come under its full control.
As a result, the trilateral negotiations have so far yielded no results, with both sides holding firm to their positions. With peace talks at an impasse, Ushakov remarked that
“only one serious step needs to be taken,”hinting that a shift in Ukraine's stance is required to restart dialogue. If negotiations remain impossible, Moscow reserves the right to resort to military action.
The deadlock in trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States highlights the deep tensions arising from fundamental disagreements over the conditions needed to resume dialogue. The lack of compromise on either side risks further escalation of the conflict, particularly given Russia's active military preparations. This underscores the need for international support to stabilize the region and explore pathways toward a peaceful resolution.
As the stalemate continues, the possibility of a ceasefire remains uncertain. Recent discussions have highlighted the complexities surrounding peace talks, especially with President Zelenskyy's emphasis on maintaining Ukraine's territorial integrity.
