Widespread Attacks Hit Kyiv and Other Parts of Ukraine
In the early hours of September 8, Russia launched a coordinated assault involving missiles and drones targeting Kyiv alongside multiple Ukrainian regions. The strikes resulted in two fatalities, ten injuries—with five hospitalized and two in critical condition—fires across several districts of the capital, and extensive damage to key infrastructure. In Odesa region, Russian forces struck a civilian market. In Kharkiv, two people were wounded and a multi-story residential building was damaged. Early morning attacks in Sumy region targeted a Kyiv-Sumy train locomotive. Additional strikes also affected Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the situation, stating, "The attack was complex and deliberately designed by Russia to maximize harm to civilians, combining ballistic, cruise, and anti-ship missiles with Shahed drones. Significant damage to residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure in the capital has been caused." He emphasized the urgent need for the FREYJA anti-ballistic missile system, noting, "While we have achieved strong results against cruise missiles, ballistic missile defense remains particularly challenging.
