Russia's First Use of Starlink to Control BM-35 Drones Poses New Threat to Ukraine

Вперше використання Starlink Росією для управління БМ-35 безпілотниками створює серйозні ризики для України.

Russian Forces Employ Starlink to Operate BM-35 Drone, Escalating Threat to Ukraine

Military expert Serhii 'Flash' has reported the first confirmed instance of Russian forces using Starlink satellite communications to control a BM-35 drone, marking a significant and dangerous technological escalation in the war. This development represents a critical advancement in the military technologies being deployed on the battlefield, directly challenging Ukraine's existing countermeasures.

Previously, Starlink terminals were observed only on 'Molniya' (Lightning) type drones. Their adaptation for the BM-35 indicates a broadening of Russian drone capabilities. Serhii 'Flash' warns that the use of Starlink on Iranian-designed 'Shahed' drones could follow within days, raising further alarm. Drones utilizing this satellite link are immune to traditional electronic warfare (EW) jamming, making them far more resilient and difficult to counter.

Implications of Starlink-Enabled Drone Warfare

The widespread mounting of Starlink terminals on 'Molniya' drones began roughly ten days ago. Furthermore, the integration of mesh networking technology on 'Shahed' drones allows them to create airborne relay networks, significantly boosting their operational range and effectiveness. Upgrades to the 'Shahed's' electronic protection include 16-element antennas of Chinese origin, underscoring the continuous modernization of Russia's drone arsenal with available foreign components.

Serhii 'Flash': 'This development radically alters the threat level, as these UAVs are not susceptible to electronic warfare systems.'

These combined factors present severe new challenges for Ukrainian air defense and highlight the urgent need to adapt to rapid changes in battlefield technology. The use of commercial satellite internet for military drones opens new tactical possibilities for Russian forces, potentially impacting the dynamics of the conflict. For context, Ukraine has itself relied heavily on Starlink for secure communications since the full-scale invasion began, making this Russian adoption a particularly concerning turn.

The new strategy, which emphasizes enhanced resilience to electronic countermeasures, jeopardizes Ukraine's existing defense systems, which may struggle against this modernized threat. This underscores the critical necessity for Ukraine to adapt and upgrade its own military technologies to ensure national security in the face of an evolving adversary.
