Russia has for the first time used the new drone 'Geran-5': what is known about the threat

Росія вперше застосувала новий дрон 'Геран-5': яка інформація про ризики, пов’язані з його використанням?

Introduction of the drone 'Geran-5'

The Russian Federation has for the first time used the new drone 'Geran-5' for attacks on Ukraine at the beginning of 2026. This drone has become part of Russia's military strategy and poses a significant threat to Ukrainian forces.

The 'Geran-5' drone has the capability to carry a warhead weighing about 90 kg. The claimed range of its flight is approximately 1000 km, allowing for attacks from great distances. These characteristics make the drone particularly dangerous for civilian and military targets on Ukrainian territory.

Production and capabilities of 'Geran-5'

There are also indications that Russia has likely opened an internal production line for the manufacture of 'Geran-5'. This may indicate Russia's intention to increase the production and use of new drones in its military campaign. Additionally, Russian troops are developing a method to launch 'Geran-5' from aircraft, including from Su-25 attack planes, which could significantly expand their usage capabilities.

'Geran-5' drones can also be equipped with R-73 'air-to-air' missiles, increasing their combat effectiveness. Considering these factors, the new drone 'Geran-5' is capable of significantly impacting the situation on the front and posing new challenges for Ukrainian defense forces.

The use of next-generation drones like 'Geran-5' highlights the evolution of military technologies used in modern conflicts. The growing ability of Russia to produce and integrate such drones into its strategy could lead to changes in the balance of power on the front, as well as affect the tactics of Ukrainian forces. This presents new requirements for Ukraine's air defense system and necessitates adaptation to new threats.
