Shahed Drone Strike Targets Helicopters in Kropyvnytskyi
On January 24, Russian forces launched an attack using Shahed drones against helicopters in the Kropyvnytskyi region. According to Serhiy Beskrestnov, an advisor to the Minister of Defense on technological development, satellite communication terminals from Starlink were used for the first time to control these drones. This allowed for real-time monitoring and guidance of their actions, marking a significant tactical shift. The Starlink system, developed by SpaceX, was initially provided to Ukraine for defense, but its potential for adaptation by opposing forces has been a growing concern among analysts.
The drones flew at an extremely low altitude, skimming the ground, which helped them avoid detection by radar systems. This new application of technology is the result of upgrades that have transformed the Shahed from a basic loitering munition into a precision weapon capable of striking dynamic targets. Serhiy Beskrestnov noted that this incident represents the first confirmed use of Shahed drones operated via Starlink, highlighting rapid progress in military technology adaptation.
“I conclude that we are witnessing the first use of Shahed drones on Starlink. These Shaheds were manually controlled and flew almost at ground level to avoid radar detection,” commented Serhiy Beskrestnov.
He also stated that he had anticipated this development but felt his warnings were not heeded. “Did I expect this? Yes. Did I warn about it? Yes. Did anyone listen to me? No,” he added. These events point to a new phase in the application of commercial technology in modern warfare.
