Ukraine Severs Russian Access to Starlink Satellite Communications
Ukraine has implemented a registration system for Starlink terminals to block their use by Russian military forces. This move follows an announcement on February 5 from Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, regarding the first official batch of authorized Starlink terminals now operational within the Ukrainian army. This registration process has enabled the blocking of Russian Starlink terminals, preventing them from functioning on Ukrainian territory. The ongoing verification of Ukrainian terminals demonstrates active efforts by Ukrainian forces in this domain. Starlink, a satellite internet service provided by SpaceX, has become a critical tool for battlefield communications.
Russian military bloggers have already noted that their troops can no longer use Starlink terminals, which they had previously integrated for drone operations. Specifically, Russian forces were using drones equipped with Starlink for targeting along the E-50 Pokrovsk-Pavlohrad highway in the Dnipropetrovsk region. In turn, a Ukrainian brigade commander confirmed this information, stating that the occupiers had begun mass use of this technology for effective drone management.
Implementing a 'White List' for Terminal Control
The Ukrainian government has also adopted a resolution to implement a 'white list' for Starlink terminals, allowing for strict control over their usage. For the Defense Forces, a separate, secure channel operates through the Delta system, enhancing communication security. Minister Fedorov emphasized the importance of rapid verification of Starlink terminals used for defense. According to analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), without Starlink terminals, Russian forces may be unable to conduct aerial isolation of the battlefield at the same pace and depth as in recent weeks. These changes could significantly impact Russian capabilities for reconnaissance and combat operations on the Ukrainian front.
“Establishing control over Starlink terminals is a crucial step in countering Russian aggression.” - Mykhailo Fedorov
Blocking Russia's use of Starlink could affect the effectiveness of its combat operations, particularly in drone management, potentially altering the course of military engagements. The Ukrainian army continues to refine its communication systems, which undoubtedly enhances its combat readiness and safety on the frontline.
