Ukraine Hosts India’s Top Diplomat
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India's foreign minister, held talks in the Ukrainian capital. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia launched jet-powered Shahed drones during the visit, apparently with Iranian assistance. The attack did not prevent the meeting from going ahead: Ukrainian combat aircraft intercepted and destroyed most of the drones, ensuring the delegation’s safety.
Main Themes of the Conversation
The discussions focused on Russia’s war against Ukraine and India’s stance that peace must take priority. Zelensky made clear that Kyiv values India’s position, stating:
“This time should certainly not be a time of war. Peace is what is needed.” — Volodymyr Zelensky
He went on to say that Ukraine appreciates India’s wish to bring an end to “this unjust war – Russia’s war against Ukraine.”
The situation in the Black Sea and the danger it posed to civilian shipping were also on the agenda. Zelensky said:
“It is absolutely unacceptable to block food supplies to regions where people depend so closely on those sea routes.” — Volodymyr Zelensky
Russian interference with Ukrainian ports and the food corridor was treated with deep concern.
The encounter in Kyiv is seen as a key moment in the effort to strengthen security and move toward peace, while drawing attention to the humanitarian cost of the war. It also reflects Ukraine’s push for broader global support, with India playing a potentially influential role in shaping international responses to Russian aggression. The Black Sea shipping issue, meanwhile, highlights how regional stability is linked to food security around the world.
The ongoing conflict has prompted strong statements from global leaders. Recently, President Zelensky emphasized that Putin will ultimately have to end the war, despite his reluctance. This underscores the urgency for diplomatic efforts and international cooperation to restore peace in the region.
