Massive shelling of Ukraine on January 9
On the night of January 9, Russia carried out a massive shelling of Ukraine using the ballistic missile 'Oreshnik' and other types of weapons. As a result of this shelling, there are dead and injured, including in Kyiv and Lviv. During the night, the launch of was recorded:
- 242 drones,
- 13 ballistic missiles, including one ballistic missile 'Oreshnik',
- 22 cruise missiles.
The speed of the aerial target reached about 13 thousand kilometers per hour.
Situation in Kyiv and Lviv
In Kyiv, as a result of the shelling, 20 residential buildings were damaged. As of now, four fatalities are known in the capital, including a paramedic. Dozens of people were also injured. In Lviv, a critical infrastructure facility was attacked.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the events, stating that
“maximum possible efforts are being made to restore heating and electricity for the people”. He also emphasized that the attack occurred during a significant cold snap, highlighting that
“this is directed against the ordinary life of ordinary people”.
Zelensky expressed the need for a clear response from the international community, particularly the United States, to Russia's actions. The president noted that Russia should receive signals that its obligation is to focus on diplomacy and that it should feel the consequences of its actions that lead to killings and the destruction of infrastructure.
This massive shelling is part of Russia's ongoing military aggression against Ukraine, which has been ongoing for several years. Such attacks, especially during the winter period, aim not only at military but also psychological consequences for the civilian population, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the country. The reaction of the international community, especially support from the USA and other countries, could be decisive in the further escalation of the conflict and ensuring the safety of the Ukrainian citizens.
