Attack on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure

The Russian Federation launched a massive strike on Ukraine's energy infrastructure on the night of January 9, 2026, using 242 drones, 13 ballistic missiles, and 22 cruise missiles. One of the medium-range ballistic missiles used during the attack was the 'Oreshnik' missile, which struck energy facilities. As a result of this shelling, 25 people were injured, including four fatalities.

Call for Preparation

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed city administrations, urging them to prepare for similar attacks, noting that Russia is trying to exploit worsening weather conditions, particularly the cold, to strike energy facilities.

“The Russians are taking advantage of the weather – the cold – and are trying to hit as many of our energy facilities as possible,” Zelensky emphasized.

He also noted that repair crews are working in Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv regions to restore essential services.

“Repair crews are effectively working constantly in Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv. Maximum forces are involved to restore essential services,” the president added.

Estonian leader Kaja Kallas characterized the use of the 'Oreshnik' missile as an escalation of the war against Ukraine and a signal to Europe and the USA. It has been noted that the shelling affected:

  • Kiev and the region
  • Dnipropetrovsk region
  • Lviv region
  • Kirovohrad region
  • Cherkasy region
  • Odesa region

These actions by Russia pose a threat to Ukraine's energy security and raise concerns among the international community.

This attack is part of Russia's ongoing strategy to destabilize Ukraine by targeting critical infrastructure, especially during winter conditions. The restoration of the energy system in Ukraine requires significant efforts, highlighting the importance of international support in this situation. The escalating tensions in the region also indicate the need to strengthen security measures and prepare for potential new attacks.
