Massive Russian Strike Cripples Ukraine's Power Grid, Leaving Regions in the Dark

Масштабний ракетний удар Росії паралізував електромережі України, залишивши багато областей без світла.

Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure Targeted in Major Attack

In a large-scale assault on the night of February 3rd, Russia targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The attacks focused on combined heat and power plants (CHPPs) and thermal power stations (TPS) in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. Significant damage was inflicted on power plants operated by the company DTEK, including its facilities in the Odesa region, which were also hit by missiles and drones.

Parts of Kyiv's left bank, specifically the Dnipro and Darnytskyi districts, have been forced into emergency power outages. The right bank of the capital is operating on temporary schedules. Ukrenergo, the national energy company, reports a significant number of outages in the Kyiv, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, and Odesa regions, as well as in the city of Kyiv itself. Damage to several energy facilities across different regions is complicating the overall power supply situation.

Widespread Power Supply Disruptions

To stabilize the grid, scheduled power restrictions for industry and hourly rolling blackouts for all categories of consumers are being implemented. Emergency shutdowns have been introduced in some areas. As of the morning of February 3rd, icy conditions have left 68 settlements without power in the Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kherson regions.

Emergency repair work is already underway where the security situation permits. Energy workers are doing everything possible to restore electricity to all consumers as quickly as possible. Due to the consequences of today's and previous Russian strikes, power restriction schedules for industry and hourly outage schedules for all consumers are in effect across all regions of Ukraine.

This strike is part of Russia's ongoing campaign to destabilize Ukraine, particularly targeting its energy infrastructure, which has already sustained extensive damage throughout the conflict. These systematic attacks aim to weaken civilian resilience, especially during the harsh winter months.

Amid freezing temperatures and icy weather, such strikes can have severe consequences for the population. Power outages complicate the operation of critical infrastructure, particularly in the medical sector. Restoring electricity supply may take a considerable amount of time, with energy workers facing significant safety challenges while conducting repairs in hazardous conditions.
