Hypersonic Missiles and Drones: Russia Launches Massive Strike on Kyiv

Ракетні атаки та безпілотники: масована агресія Росії в столиці України

Major Assault on Kyiv

On June 15, 2026, Russian forces carried out a large-scale attack on Ukraine, focusing primarily on Kyiv and the surrounding region. The operation involved strike drones, ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, and cruise missiles. Damage was reported at 50 locations, including a fire on the roof of the Dormition Cathedral in the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, as well as hits on residential buildings and other infrastructure. This attack marks one of the most significant escalations in recent months, drawing widespread concern.

The assault began with a wave of drones, including Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles, jet-powered drones, and decoy drones designed to exhaust air defense systems. Shortly after 1:00 AM, intensive ballistic missile launches were detected, likely from Iskander-M systems or S-400 surface-to-air missiles, coming from the north. Monitoring channels also suggest that some strikes may have involved Zircon hypersonic missiles launched from the temporarily occupied Crimean peninsula. Additionally, Russian strategic aviation launched cruise missiles that maneuvered through the airspace of several regions before reaching their targets.

Damage Across Kyiv Districts

Strikes caused damage in multiple areas of Kyiv. In the Pechersk district, a double strike ignited the roof of the Dormition Cathedral and damaged residential buildings and a dormitory. In the Obolon district, a direct hit on a nine-story residential building destroyed or damaged around 30 civilian vehicles and sparked fires at warehouses. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, five strikes occurred within 30 minutes, damaging high-rise apartments and burning down a local market and a grocery store.

Residential buildings were also hit in the Solomianskyi, Desnianskyi, Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, and Podilskyi districts. Debris from the attacks struck the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio. This assault represents a new phase of escalation in the conflict, alarming both the local population and the international community. Information about the events was provided by the Ukrainian Air Force, monitoring channels, and the news outlet Glavcom.

“The massive attack on Kyiv marks a new level of tension in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, indicating a possible intensification of military actions by the aggressor. Given that cultural heritage sites were targeted, this could provoke additional international reaction and condemnation.”

Ukraine’s response, as well as the reaction of the international community to these events, could significantly influence the further development of the situation in the region.

The recent escalation in Kyiv is part of a broader pattern of intensified assaults on Ukraine, as evidenced by a previous attack involving a staggering number of missiles and drones. This wave of violence underscores the ongoing threat faced by Ukrainian cities and highlights the urgent need for international support.
