Assault on Kharkiv Region
On April 14, Russian military forces launched a major assault on critical infrastructure in the Kharkiv region, targeting the Pechenihy Dam and the city of Kharkiv. The attacks resulted in civilian deaths and injuries. This region, Ukraine's second-largest city, has been a frequent target since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
At approximately 10:45 a.m., six guided aerial bombs were dropped on the Pechenihy Dam, located in the Chuhuiv district. Simultaneously, a combined missile and drone attack, using Shahed and Molniya systems, struck Kharkiv. In the city's Kyivskyi district, two private homes were damaged by shelling. Earlier that same morning, a Russian missile hit a multi-story residential building, destroying one apartment and injuring a woman.
Consequences of the Attack
According to local officials, over the past day, Russian forces attacked 23 settlements across five districts of the Kharkiv region. In Velykyi Burluk, shelling killed one local woman and wounded 20 others. This is not the first attack on the Pechenihy Dam; Russian troops also struck it with missiles in December of last year. Furthermore, on March 23, two aerial bombs completely destroyed a dam on the Siverskyi Donets River in the Donetsk region.
Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, stated: 'The enemy continues to shell our settlements and civilian infrastructure. Literally half an hour ago, the enemy directed six guided aerial bombs at the Pechenihy Dam.'
Defense forces, medical personnel, police, and rescuers are working at the sites, providing aid to victims and assessing the scale of the damage.
The attacks on the Kharkiv region underscore the continuation of Russian military operations targeting not only military objectives but also civilian infrastructure. Strikes on critical facilities like dams pose severe risks to local populations and the environment. Given the pattern of such attacks, sustained international attention and support for Ukraine's defense efforts remain crucial.
The recent escalation of attacks in the Kharkiv region highlights the ongoing threat to civilian life and infrastructure. In a related incident, the region faced additional strikes from Russian drones and missiles, resulting in significant damage to residential buildings.
