Widespread Missile and Drone Assault Hits Ukraine Overnight
In the early hours of November 3, Russia launched a massive missile and drone offensive targeting Ukraine, focusing primarily on the Kyiv, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. The attackers deployed a combination of ballistic and cruise missiles alongside 289 armed drones. In Kharkiv alone, casualties have risen to 73, with significant damage reported to critical infrastructure.
The assault began with the launch of Iskander-M and KN-23 ballistic missiles, as well as Zircon anti-ship missiles, fired from Russia’s Rostov, Voronezh, and Kursk regions. Additionally, 59 cruise missiles including X-101, X-59, X-69, and Iskander-K were launched from Vologda, Orenburg, and Oryol regions. Among the 289 drones used were 120 jet-powered Shaheds, Herber drones, and Parody decoy drones. Drone launches originated from Oryol, Kursk, Millerovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, occupied Donetsk, Hvardiiske, and Chauda in Crimea.
Ukrainian Air Defense Successfully Neutralizes Majority of Threats
By 9:00 AM, Ukraine’s air defense forces had intercepted or neutralized 309 enemy targets, including 3 ballistic missiles, 49 cruise missiles, and 257 drones—89 of which were jet-powered. Missile and drone impacts were recorded at 23 separate locations, with debris falling in an additional 14 areas. The attack persisted beyond the morning update, with several hostile drones still airborne.
The Russian forces targeted thermal power plants (TPPs), hydroelectric power stations (HPPs), and electrical substations. In Kharkiv, two medical facilities, a laboratory, residential buildings, and vehicles sustained damage. Preliminary assessments suggest Russian troops may have used FAB-250 aerial bombs in the Kharkiv attacks. In Dnipro, 15 people were injured, with three in critical condition, while ongoing threats of follow-up strikes hinder rescue efforts.
Odesa region also suffered renewed strikes on energy infrastructure and civilian sites, causing damage to a DTEK facility and resulting in power outages across the area. Administrative buildings, warehouses, and production workshops were also affected. In Rivne region, a nighttime attack damaged one of Ukrenergo’s substations.
This recent offensive marks a continuation of Russia’s aggressive campaign against Ukraine, intensifying the risks posed to civilian infrastructure. The swift and effective response from Ukrainian air defense units has mitigated much of the assault, yet the widespread destruction continues to inflict serious harm. How this situation unfolds will likely shape strategic decisions for Ukraine and its international partners as they confront ongoing aggression.
As the situation in Ukraine escalates, recent reports indicate that the air defense forces have effectively countered a significant number of drone strikes and missile attacks.
