Hotel in Sumy Shelled

Russian military forces struck a hotel in central Sumy, Ukraine. While emergency crews were fighting the fire ignited by the initial strike, a second attack occurred, deliberately targeting the rescue workers as they performed their duties. This tactic of striking first responders is a violation of international humanitarian law.

During the rescue operation, 50 civilians were successfully evacuated. Despite the extreme danger of the follow-up strike, none of the emergency personnel were injured. The fire was ultimately extinguished.

A Dangerous Escalation

This incident highlights the intensification of military actions in Ukraine, particularly in the Sumy region, where Russian forces continue to target civilian infrastructure. The second strike during active rescue operations underscores the severe risks faced not only by civilians but also by the emergency services attempting to aid them. It is crucial for the international community to continue monitoring these developments and to support Ukraine in its efforts to protect its citizens.
