Sloviansk City Center Struck by Russian FAB-1500 Bomb, Damaging Historic Landmark and Dozens of Buildings

Серце Слов’янська постраждало від обстрілу, зруйнувавши багатовікові пам’ятки та численні споруди.

Airstrike on Sloviansk

On April 15, Russian forces launched an airstrike on the central district of Sloviansk, employing a powerful FAB-1500 aerial bomb. The attack, which occurred around 5 a.m., inflicted severe damage to civilian infrastructure, residential areas, and a historic site. This latest strike is part of a pattern of attacks on urban centers in eastern Ukraine. Currently, one casualty is known: a 57-year-old man who is being prepared for transport to a clinic in Dnipro.

The assault damaged at least 39 apartment buildings and destroyed or damaged 15 vehicles. A children's sports facility, which held protected status as a historical monument, was completely destroyed. Additionally, one administrative building was leveled and another was seriously damaged. Fires broke out in several apartments, further complicating rescue and recovery efforts.

Context of Escalating Conflict

This attack follows the recent destruction of another cultural heritage site: the 19th-century Donets-Zakharyzhevsky estate in the village of Velykyi Burluk, Kharkiv Oblast, which was hit on April 7. A fire after that strike led to the building's total loss.

Vadim Lyakh noted: 'At this time, we know of one injured person. This is a 57-year-old man. He is being prepared for transport to a clinic in Dnipro.'

The situation in Sloviansk remains tense. This airstrike underscores the continued escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, where civilian infrastructure remains under constant threat. The importance of protecting historical monuments during warfare is increasingly evident, as their destruction not only violates cultural heritage but also inflicts deep harm on local communities.

Amid ongoing hostilities, such incidents raise serious concerns regarding:

  • the safety of the civilian population
  • the long-term recovery of conflict-affected regions

The recent airstrike in Sloviansk is part of a broader trend of escalating violence in Ukraine, as evidenced by similar attacks across the region. Just hours before the incident in Sloviansk, multiple Ukrainian regions faced drone assaults, resulting in significant damage and casualties. Such patterns highlight the ongoing threats to civilian life and infrastructure.
