Russia has once again violated the laws of war and international maritime law by attacking the civilian vessel Viva in the Black Sea. The target of the occupiers was a bulk carrier that was heading with a cargo of sunflower oil to Egypt. The attack took place in open water, within the economic zone of Ukraine.
The crew of the vessel consisted of 11 Turkish citizens, who were successfully evacuated alive after the attack. Although evacuation was prepared, it was not needed as there were no casualties. The vessel continued on to the port in Egypt.
Ukrainian military forces are responding strongly to this incident, calling it a serious violation of international law and evidence of Russia's infringement on the freedom of navigation. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are calling for the protection of Ukraine's rights to free seas and promise to stand guard.
