Widespread Russian Assaults on April 16

On April 16, Russian forces launched a combined assault with missiles and drones targeting the Ukrainian cities of Dnipro, Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv. The attacks resulted in significant civilian casualties and destruction across the country. These strikes are part of a broader pattern of attacks on Ukrainian urban centers that has intensified in recent months.

In Dnipro, the overnight attack completely destroyed a building at 23 Shevchenko Street, which housed the 'Lestvitsya' (The Ladder) Center of Orthodox Culture affiliated with the Moscow Patriarchate. The center contained a library and a home church dedicated to St. John Climacus. As noted by Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov,

"The fully destroyed building at Shevchenko, 23, contained the 'Lestvitsya' Center of Orthodox Culture on its first floor."

The strike in Dnipro killed two people and left others with severe injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, shrapnel wounds, and acoustic barotrauma. One woman is reported to be in critical condition. The assault also damaged residential areas, hitting a five-story apartment building and partially destroying a private house.

Casualties in Kyiv and Odesa

Fatalities were also reported in Kyiv and Odesa as a result of the attacks. Odesa experienced several waves of strikes involving both missiles and attack drones. According to available information, between 07:00 on April 15 and 07:00 on April 16, Russian forces carried out two waves of combined attacks across Ukraine. The cities targeted on April 16 were:

  • Dnipro
  • Kyiv
  • Odesa
  • Kharkiv

These attacks underscore the ongoing conflict's severe toll on civilian life and infrastructure. The continued targeting of urban areas highlights the war's devastating human cost and the challenges facing Ukraine's defense.

The recent escalation of attacks on Ukrainian cities is not an isolated incident. Just hours before the assault on Dnipro, three other Ukrainian cities faced a similar fate, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries.
