Kharkiv's Response to Hostile Attacks
Russian forces have destroyed a critical piece of energy infrastructure in Kharkiv. Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that an emergency operations center is now working around the clock to mitigate the impact of the attack. Emergency services and technical specialists are on-site, doing everything possible to maintain control of the situation. This attack is part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's power grid, especially during the winter months.
Preparations for an Energy Crisis
On January 14, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal highlighted Kharkiv's preparations for a potential energy crisis. He stated that regional and local authorities had worked to secure necessary resources for the city, including mobile heating units and power generation equipment. Shmyhal noted, however, that Kyiv was unfortunately far less prepared, which would necessitate crisis measures there.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also commented on Kharkiv's readiness. During an energy meeting on January 14, he emphasized that local authorities had done a great deal to ensure the stability of the energy system.
