Night Strike on Sumy
Russian troops attacked the city of Sumy with drones on the night of April 21. As a result of a series of explosions, approximately ten were recorded, one of the strikes hit the athletic hall of Sumy State University. The building suffered severe damage: a wall was destroyed, and the internal structures were affected. Additionally, residential houses, cars, and a medical facility in the city were damaged, and windows in neighboring high-rises were shattered.
The number of injured reached 15 people, including three children. In the morning of April 21, a headquarters for addressing the aftermath began operations at the site. National athletics championships, which were held in this hall before the full-scale invasion in 2022, have been moved to Kyiv.
The Pain of Loss for Ukrainian Athletes
Famous Ukrainian athletes Tetiana Melnyk and Anna Ryzhykova expressed bitterness and outrage in connection with the destruction of the sports facility.

The Sumy hall held special significance for Ukrainian sports, serving as a venue for competitions and training. Within its walls, titles of champions of Ukraine were won by stars such as:

In addition, handball matches were held here, where Ukraine faced teams from Iceland, France, Spain, and North Macedonia. Such sports infrastructure objects are extremely difficult to restore in wartime conditions.

The destruction of the hall, which had immense importance for training athletes, demonstrates the humanitarian consequences of the conflict. Such acts of vandalism not only cause material damage but also deliver a heavy blow to the morale of young athletes, undermining the development of Ukrainian sports.
