Zaporizhzhia Struck Again: Assessing the Damage from Russian Attacks

Постраждале місто: оцінка наслідків нових російських обстрілів у Запоріжжі.

Strikes Target Zaporizhzhia and Other Ukrainian Cities

Russian forces launched a renewed assault on the city of Zaporizhzhia, striking it four times. The attack damaged private homes, with one residence catching fire before emergency services quickly extinguished it. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties.

Overnight on January 26, the Russian military attacked Zaporizhzhia and its surrounding region, including the Zaporizhzhia district, using drones. A strike in Vilniansk sparked a fire that damaged apartment buildings, blowing out windows and damaging their exteriors.

A Continuing Series of Attacks

This latest strike is part of an ongoing series of bombardments. On the night of January 24-25, Russian forces attacked Kharkiv with strike drones. The preceding night, January 23-24, saw an assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, which involved various types of missiles and attack drones. One target of that Kyiv attack was the Roshen confectionery factory in the city's Holosiivskyi district.

These repeated attacks on Zaporizhzhia and other cities underscore a concerning escalation in hostilities. The conflict, now in its third year, continues to see civilian areas targeted despite international condemnation. Ensuring the safety of civilians requires that local authorities and emergency services have adequate resources to respond to such threats.

During this period of intensified conflict, particularly in winter, the potential humanitarian consequences for populations enduring these attacks and destruction must also be a critical consideration.
