Russia's Accusations and Ukraine's Response

Russia accuses Ukraine of a drone attack on President Vladimir Putin's residence in the Novgorod region. The attack occurred on the night of December 29, after which Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that 91 drones had been destroyed. The Governor of Novgorod Region, Alexander Dronov, also reported on 41 neutralized drones during December 28-29. These accusations have drawn a response from the Ukrainian side.

Previous Incidents and Residence Security

In May 2023, there was a direct attack on the Kremlin when two explosive-laden drones targeted the Kremlin in Moscow. The residence, known as 'Valdai', is protected by at least 12 Pantsir-S1 type air defense systems, indicating a high level of security. Since the beginning of 2025 until December 11, there have been recorded attacks by 80 drones in the Novgorod region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the situation, calling the accusations 'a damn nonsense of the Russian Federation'. At the same time, former US President Donald Trump noted that

“it is one thing to conduct offensive actions because they are the aggressors. It is another thing to attack his house”
.
Yan Matveev also expressed his disbelief in the facts of the attack, stating: 'I do not believe in an attack on the residence.'

The high level of security at Putin's residence and numerous air defense systems raise questions about the possibility of successfully carrying out such an attack. Furthermore, it seems that the governor and the Ministry of Defense are unaware, adding further doubts about the veracity of the Russian accusations. The situation remains tense, and further investigations may shed light on this event.

Russia's accusations regarding the attack on President Putin's residence may indicate an escalation of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, as well as increasing tensions in the region. Given the previous incidents and the security levels of important facilities, these events could be a reason for additional diplomatic and military responses from both sides. The further development of events will depend on the reactions of the international community and potential corresponding actions from Russia and Ukraine.
