Military analyst Michael Kofman has asserted that in 2025, Russia's military leadership provided President Vladimir Putin with reports of battlefield successes that did not exist, a practice impacting the war's continuation. Speaking in a special episode of the Foreign Affairs podcast marking the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Kofman stressed that the actual situation on the front lines is far removed from the optimistic briefings received by the Kremlin. According to the analyst, throughout 2025, Russian military commanders informed the political leadership of achievements that were never realized.
"The war is going significantly better than it actually is," Kofman noted.Objective indicators, by his assessment, point to serious problems facing Russia. Specifically, irrecoverable losses are catching up with recruitment rates, and Russia has failed to capture the entirety of the Donetsk region.
"It's hard to argue that 2025 went well for Russia given all its advantages," the analyst added.
