Major Drone Assault on Odesa Region
On January 27, Russian forces launched a major assault on Ukraine's Odesa region, deploying more than 50 attack drones. This attack damaged dozens of residential buildings and critical infrastructure, triggering several large fires. The assault has resulted in 23 civilian casualties, including children, according to the latest reports.
During evacuation operations, rescue workers located 14 individuals, one of whom was a child. Of the 23 total injured, nine people required hospitalization. Among those hospitalized are two girls, born in 2013 and 2008, and a woman who was 39 weeks pregnant. One person is reported to be in serious condition, while eight others sustained injuries of moderate severity.
Extensive Damage and Aftermath
The scale of destruction from the drone attack is severe. Dozens of apartments in multi-story buildings were destroyed or damaged, with facades torn apart and windows shattered. The list of specific targets hit includes:
- a two-story residential building;
- apartments on various floors of a four-story and a nine-story building;
- a church;
- a kindergarten;
- a secondary school (lyceum);
- a fitness center;
- private vehicles.
Furthermore, major fires broke out at several locations. Emergency and rescue operations are ongoing, with concerns that people may still be trapped under rubble. This attack on the Odesa region is part of a broader offensive that also targeted energy infrastructure in the Mykolaiv region. The previous day, on January 26, a drone struck a high-rise building in the city of Kryvyi Rih.
This assault reflects an escalation in the conflict and the continued use of drones as a primary instrument of warfare.
The extensive damage to civilian infrastructure underscores the grave threat the war poses to non-combatants and raises serious concerns about regional safety.
