Ukraine Hit by Large-Scale Drone and Missile Barrage
In the early hours of February 3, Russian forces launched a massive combined assault on Ukraine, employing drones and missiles. The attack inflicted significant damage to infrastructure across the Odesa, Vinnytsia, Kyiv, and Sumy regions, leaving thousands of residents without power and striking critical facilities. This latest strike is part of a concerted Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's energy grid, especially during the winter months.
Widespread Damage and Civilian Impact
The Odesa region saw its energy and civilian infrastructure attacked, temporarily cutting electricity to over 50,000 residents. The assault damaged three residential buildings, along with warehouse and administrative premises, and several passenger vehicles. Fortunately, local authorities reported no casualties in Odesa, where critical infrastructure is now operating on backup generators.
Vinnytsia region also suffered a mass attack, resulting in power outages across 50 settlements, with confirmed strikes on critical infrastructure objects. In Kyiv, three people were wounded, while four injuries were reported in the Sumy region. Russian forces additionally targeted DTEK thermal power plants, causing substantial damage to the stations' equipment.
Preliminary data indicates the assault involved an estimated 350 to 500 unmanned aerial vehicles and up to 65 missiles of various types. 'Three residential buildings were damaged, as well as warehouse and administrative premises and passenger cars. Thankfully, there are no dead or injured. Critical infrastructure is running on generators,' stated Oleh Kiper.
This attack forms part of the ongoing escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began in 2014, and underscores the persistent threat to civilians and essential services. In response to repeated missile strikes, Ukraine continues to bolster its air defense systems and takes measures to restore damaged infrastructure. Simultaneously, the targeting of energy facilities highlights a Russian strategy aimed at destabilizing daily life across Ukraine.
