Remote Mining Threat Emerges in Poltava Region

Remote mining operations conducted by Russian forces using Shahed-type drones are posing a serious threat in the Poltava region, even though this area has never been under occupation. Local emergency responders now face heightened risks due to these attacks. Major General Andriy Khryzhniak, head of the State Emergency Service in Poltava and a civil protection official, stated that remote mining presents a major danger for rescue workers, as Russian occupiers frequently drop mines from drones, complicating their duties.

A single Shahed drone can carry up to eight mines in special containers, making this tactic especially hazardous. Khryzhniak also emphasized that

“the Russians very often carry out remote mining from Shahed drones. There are many such dangers, and the fact that we are not in a combat zone, but not far from it, unfortunately does not reduce the risks for rescuers.”

Countering New Threats

To address this threat, robotic systems are being used to deliver shaped charges to munitions. Pyrotechnicians then conduct controlled detonations from a safe distance, reducing risks to personnel. Electronic warfare expert and advisor to the Minister of Defense, Serhiy Bezkrestnov (Flash), has also warned about the dangers of remote mining by Russian forces.

Operators from the 8th Regiment of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces destroyed a Russian Zemledeliye remote mining system, marking a key step in countering this threat. Given the ongoing danger, it is crucial that all services operate with maximum caution and readiness.

This situation in Poltava illustrates new tactical approaches by Russian forces, who are attempting to extend the threat zone beyond active combat areas. Drone-based remote mining creates fresh challenges for rescuers and military personnel, requiring the adoption of new technologies and strategies to ensure safety. Operations aimed at destroying Russian equipment, such as the Zemledeliye system, are critical for reducing the threat and improving conditions in the region.

As the situation escalates in the Poltava region, the use of advanced technologies on Russian drones is becoming increasingly evident.
