Increased Russian Activity on the Kostiantynivka Front

Russian forces have stepped up the number of assaults on the Kostiantynivka axis, relying on small, highly mobile units. This was reported by Vyacheslav Hudz, commander of the 3rd Mechanized Battalion of the 44th Separate Mechanized Brigade. According to information aired on 'Army TV', the enemy’s intensified operations stem from fresh reinforcements arriving on this section of the frontline. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi also confirmed a rise in Russian military activity during April.

Enemy Tactics

During daylight, the enemy advances in pairs or trios when weather conditions allow drone use. At night, they deploy specialized ponchos (cloaks) designed to mask a soldier’s thermal signature from thermal imaging systems and drones. Assaults are carried out on motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), with attacks launched simultaneously from multiple directions in groups of four to seven personnel.

'Overall, the tactics haven’t changed. There are just more of them, and more die every day. When weather permits various drone flights, they advance singly or in pairs. In less favorable weather, they move in twos, threes, or fours. On motorcycles and ATVs from all directions. So not one at a time, but three, four, five, or even six or seven,' stated Vyacheslav Hudz.

The enemy conducts offensive operations using small infantry units shielded by artillery and drone support. Oleksandr Syrskyi, who carried out a working visit to combat zones in Donetsk region, emphasized the defense of the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk and Kostiantynivka-Druzhkivka urban agglomerations. Given the enemy’s heightened activity, the situation in the region remains tense.

The surge in Russian operations on the Kostiantynivka front indicates that the adversary is attempting to adapt its tactics to evolving battlefield conditions, notably by employing small mobile groups and new technologies. This development could pose serious challenges for Ukrainian forces, who must respond to these emerging threats while defending their positions. With the region under mounting pressure, it is critical that Ukrainian troops have sufficient resources and support to counter these new dangers.

The escalation of Russian military actions in the Kostiantynivka area is part of a broader pattern of increased hostilities in the Donetsk region. This recent uptick in assaults aligns with reports from Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, who highlighted the successful repulsion of numerous attacks across the region.
