Attacks on July 2
On July 2, the Russian military launched a large-scale assault on Kyiv, deploying drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as hypersonic Zircon projectiles. The attack struck 28 locations across the capital, with a confirmed death toll of 23 people. This event marks one of the most severe bombardments of the city in recent months, intensifying concerns over civilian safety.
That same day, drones targeted the city of Kstovo in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region. They hit the Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez oil refinery, Russia's fourth-largest refinery and second in gasoline output. This facility supplies nearly 30% of the gasoline consumed in the Moscow area and has an annual capacity of 17 million tons.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, another attack by occupying forces killed two people, including a seven-year-old girl. Nine others sustained injuries, among them an 11-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, both hospitalized in moderate condition. Three adults were admitted, two in serious condition, while a 54-year-old man is receiving outpatient treatment.
Athletic Achievement Amid Tragedy
Against this backdrop of tragedy, track and field athlete Lyudmila Olyanovska set a world record that had stood for 36 years. The Ukrainian racewalker won the 1-mile distance at a World Athletics Continental Tour silver-level event in Austria with a time of 6:10.09 minutes. This result surpasses the previous mark by more than six seconds.
It is also important to note that on July 2, attacks by occupying forces affected three districts of the Dnipropetrovsk region, specifically targeting the Bohynivka, Vasylkivka, and Petropavlivka communities. These events further underscore the tense situation in the area.
In response to the massive strike on Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed retaliation. These developments highlight the complex circumstances in Ukraine and reinforce the need for continued actions to ensure citizen security.
“The attacks on July 2 underscore the escalation of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, particularly regarding the use of modern military technologies.”
Meanwhile, the achievement of Ukrainian athlete Lyudmila Olyanovska shows that despite the war, the country continues to take pride in its sporting accomplishments. This can serve as a symbol of the Ukrainian people's resilience during difficult times.
