Incident with Russian missile in Poland
A Russian cruise missile violated Polish airspace during a nighttime attack on Ukraine, flying about 100 km and falling in a field near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin Voivodeship. The incident occurred around 3:40 AM local time when the object was detected, but the F-16 fighter jets that were scrambled were unable to intercept it. As a result of the missile's impact, a crater about 10 meters deep was formed.
A Mi-24 helicopter identified the crash site, located approximately 2 km from the nearest buildings. The police received reports of a loud bang in the Biłgoraj county, where law enforcement discovered a crater and debris from an unidentified object in the field. Air raid sirens were activated in Lublin, Krasnystaw, and other cities, indicating heightened readiness for potential threats.
Reaction of the Polish authorities
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk arrived at the crash site and convened a coordination group involving the Minister of Defense and relevant services.
“During the Russian massive missile attack on western Ukraine, there was a violation of Polish airspace. Therefore, I convened a coordination group that has been working at the incident site for many hours,”Tusk noted.
Poland's Minister of Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, also confirmed the involvement of military forces, stating that 'it was an extremely difficult night for our air defense systems.'
According to sources in the Polish government, 'everything indicates that it was a Russian missile.' The acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Sybiha, also confirmed that it was a cruise missile of the X-101 type. On that night, 74 missiles and nearly 300 drones were launched at Ukraine, resulting in at least 8 deaths. In response, Poland raised the readiness level of its air defense systems.
The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Warsaw did not respond to a request from Reuters regarding this incident.
