January's Assault on Zaporizhzhia
Russian strikes against the city of Zaporizhzhia and the wider region throughout January caused extensive damage to housing, vehicles, and infrastructure. These attacks resulted in the destruction of over 100 apartments and 20 cars. One assault on the city occurred at dawn, with a projectile hitting the courtyard of a multi-story residential building. Preliminary reports indicate there were no casualties from this particular strike.
Pattern of Shelling and Consequences
On January 28, Russian terrorists struck Zaporizhzhia, igniting a fire in a residential building. Furthermore, overnight on January 26, the Russian army attacked both the city and the region using drones. Occupying forces also shelled the Zaporizhzhia district, and a strike on Vilmiansk sparked a fire that damaged several high-rise buildings.
Emergency and rescue operations at the impact sites have now concluded. A separate fire in a passenger train carriage in the Kharkiv region has been fully extinguished, and cleanup from that attack is also complete.
The situation in Zaporizhzhia Oblast remains tense, with regular shelling inflicting severe damage to civilian infrastructure and homes. These persistent attacks on populated areas underscore Russia's continued aggressive policy, which deeply disrupts the lives of local residents. The region, home to Europe's largest nuclear power plant, has been a focal point of the conflict since 2022. While rescue services continue their work to mitigate the immediate aftermath, the long-term repair of the damaged infrastructure will require substantial effort and resources.
