Attacks on Zaporizhzhia Region: January-February 2024
A series of Russian attacks on Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region in early 2024 resulted in substantial destruction, civilian casualties, and large-scale power outages. The strikes, which occurred throughout January and February, damaged both residential buildings and critical infrastructure. The region is a frequent target due to its strategic location and proximity to the front lines.
One of the most severe attacks took place on the night of February 6th, when Russian forces shelled the area. This assault damaged private homes and left approximately 12,000 subscribers without electricity, further demonstrating the ongoing threat to civilian life and essential services.
Key Incidents
- On January 26th, the Russian army attacked Zaporizhzhia and the surrounding region using drones. A strike in the Vilmiansk area of Zaporizhzhia district caused a fire, and multi-story buildings there sustained significant damage, including shattered windows and damaged facades. Preliminary reports indicated no casualties from this specific attack.
- On January 22nd, Russian forces again attacked Zaporizhzhia with drones. The strike hit a parking lot near a shopping center and a private residential sector, damaging homes. Preliminary information indicated one person was wounded.
- A subsequent attack on Zaporizhzhia struck a residential neighborhood, killing three people: a 48-year-old man, a 43-year-old woman, and a 57-year-old neighbor. The blast wave and debris damaged at least six private houses, and the impact ignited a fire that burned three cars.
These events confirm the persistent threat from the aggressor, who employed both drones and ballistic weaponry during air raid alerts. The situation in the region remains tense, with local residents continuing to suffer the consequences of these assaults.
These attacks on the Zaporizhzhia region reflect the ongoing conflict and escalation of violence in Ukraine. The hostilities are causing serious humanitarian issues, including civilian deaths and infrastructure damage. While authorities and local organizations are working to aid the victims, the situation remains difficult due to the constant threat from the aggressor.
