Strike on a Civilian Merchant Ship
A civilian cargo vessel sailing under the flag of St. Kitts and Nevis came under attack from Russian drones while en route to Odesa to load grain. The assault sparked a fire onboard and knocked out the ship's navigation system. The crew managed to extinguish the flames themselves, and a patrol boat was dispatched to escort the vessel. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among those on board.
Damage in Odesa
In addition to the maritime strike, Russian drone operations in Odesa caused damage to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, resulting in casualties. A direct hit on a three-story apartment building destroyed several units and ignited a fire. Two two-story residential houses were also completely demolished. Firefighters rescued one individual and evacuated 20 people, including two children.
On the night of April 22, 2026, Russian forces launched a drone attack on port infrastructure in the Odesa region. This information was reported by Glavkom, citing the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development and the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority. As previously noted, the enemy drone strike in Odesa damaged homes and civilian facilities, leaving victims in its wake.
This incident highlights the escalating danger faced by commercial ships operating in the region, as well as the risks to civilians living in areas under fire. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, such attacks threaten to deepen the humanitarian crisis and disrupt global food security—Odesa being a critical hub for grain exports. The destruction of residential infrastructure also underscores the severe toll of military actions on ordinary people, underscoring the urgent need for international attention and response.
The recent attack on the civilian vessel near Odesa is part of a broader pattern of escalating drone strikes in the region. As reported, residential buildings and critical infrastructure have also suffered significant damage, raising serious concerns about the safety of both maritime operations and civilian life amid ongoing hostilities.
