Events at Kyiv’s Southern Bridge
Twice, Russian drones targeted areas close to the main support of Kyiv’s Southern Bridge, forcing a complete stoppage of metro and surface public transport crossing the bridge. Earlier, one drone detonated directly on the bridge as a metro train carrying passengers passed by. The explosion caused a loud noise and a bright flash, with smoke filling the carriage and ash falling from the ventilation system. One of the train’s windows was shattered.
The train continued to the 'Vydubychi' station, where all passengers were safely evacuated. According to reports, no injuries have been recorded.
Vitaliy Klychko stated: "Two UAV strikes hit near the main support of the Southern Bridge. Metro and surface public transport movement across the bridge has been suspended."
Specialists from the Kyivavtoshlyakhmist utility are currently inspecting the bridge’s condition following the strikes, though no official assessment has been released yet. Footage from the scene shows open flames near one of the bridge supports accompanied by thick black smoke. It is worth recalling that on September 29, Russian attacks damaged the Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi train depot.
Impact on City Infrastructure
This incident highlights the escalating threat to Kyiv’s critical infrastructure amid ongoing conflict, as well as the disruption faced by residents in daily life. The suspension of metro and surface transportation across the Southern Bridge complicates commuting and poses challenges for urban logistics. Conducting thorough inspections of the bridge is essential to guarantee public safety, as damage to key infrastructure during wartime carries serious risks for the city’s operation.
