Beryslav Under Attack: Cultural Heritage Destroyed
On August 1, 2026, at about 6 p.m., Russian forces hit Beryslav with three drones loaded with an incendiary mixture. The strike destroyed the Holy Presentation Church, a nationally protected architectural monument. The timber church was built in 1725 of oak, with no metal nails in its construction, and ranked among the oldest wooden churches in southern Ukraine. In 1782, Cossacks moved the building to Beryslav by the Dnipro River, transporting it from Perevolochna Fortress in the Poltava region.
This latest attack is yet another example of the heavy damage Ukraine's cultural heritage has suffered during the full-scale war. The Holy Presentation Church had enormous historical and cultural importance. As the Kherson Regional Prosecutor's Office put it,
"the church is a unique monument of 18th-century Ukrainian sacred architecture."The office has opened a criminal investigation into the strike as a war crime under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
More Losses Beyond Beryslav
The destruction has also extended to occupied Mariupol, where the Did kurgan has been destroyed. This archaeological site dates back to the 5th millennium BCE and, in the words of Petro Andriushchenko, head of the Center for the Study of Occupation, was a contemporary of the Egyptian pyramids. Such incidents are stark reminders of how the war has put Ukraine's ancient and early modern heritage at risk.
Attacks on cultural monuments like these expose the severe impact the conflict is having on Ukraine's history and sense of identity. The loss of buildings and burial sites with such deep roots in Ukrainian culture raises urgent concern about how to preserve what remains of the national legacy. At the same time, the prosecutor's investigation could serve as a step toward accountability and draw international attention to the ongoing destruction of cultural property in wartime.
The ongoing conflict has not only devastated Beryslav's cultural landmarks but has also led to the destruction of other significant historical sites across Ukraine. For instance, a recent missile strike has obliterated a unique windmill at an open-air museum near Kyiv, further illustrating the severe toll the war is taking on the nation's heritage. Such events highlight the urgent need for preservation efforts amidst the ongoing violence.
