Details of the Attack on Sumy
On July 11, 2024, Russian forces launched three guided aerial bombs at the city of Sumy, killing five people and wounding 31. Among the deceased were three men aged 54, 66, and 58, as well as a 13-year-old girl. One victim later died in the hospital after receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the strike.
One of the bombs hit the roadway near a public bus stop and a gas station, causing extensive damage. The following properties were damaged:
- seven apartment buildings,
- four vehicles,
- a gas station,
- a car dealership,
- a restaurant,
- a garage cooperative.
Witnesses reported that the strikes targeted a crowded area where civilians, cars, and public transport were present.
“Two of the enemy's guided bombs hit a populated spot where civilians were located, vehicles and public transport were moving. The epicenter of one strike was a road and a public transport stop. Another strike targeted an infrastructure facility. The Russians are persisting in their attempts to destroy the city's life-support systems,” commented Oleh Hryhorov on the situation.
Earlier Attacks and Ongoing Threat to Residents
This was not the first act of aggression by Russia against Sumy. On July 3, 2024, a massive strike hit the city center, killing four people—including a child—and wounding 33, six of whom were children. Approximately 400 dormitory beds were prepared for evacuated residents. The city has also introduced additional warning systems to alert the public about the threat of guided bomb attacks.
The attack on Sumy once again highlights the growing danger to civilians in Ukraine and the aggressor's efforts to damage civilian infrastructure. Amid constant assaults, local authorities are striving to ensure public safety, but the situation remains tense. These events in Sumy are part of the broader context of ongoing military operations in the region and underscore the need for international support to protect the population and restore peace.
The recent airstrikes on Sumy have raised serious concerns about the safety of civilians as this attack follows a series of previous assaults on the city.
