Russian Ski Cross Athletes Barred from 2026 Olympics Over Crimea Visits

Russian Ski Cross Team Loses 2026 Olympic Eligibility

Members of Russia's ski cross team have been ruled ineligible for the 2026 Winter Olympics due to their unauthorized training visits to Crimea. The decision follows evidence that Russian athletes held training camps in the annexed region in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. This action underscores the ongoing international stance regarding the status of Crimea. Among the athletes who participated in the training sessions in Alushta were:

  • Sergey Ridzik
  • Igor Omelin
  • Kirill Sysoev
  • Elizaveta Pankratova
  • Natalia Sherina
  • Andrey Gerasimov
  • Artem Bazhin

At the 2022 Olympics, ski cross was the freestyle discipline with the largest Russian contingent, featuring seven athletes—three men and four women. Sergey Ridzik won a bronze medal, marking a significant success for the team. However, despite these past achievements, none of the Russian ski cross athletes have been granted neutral status, which is now a prerequisite for their participation, effectively barring them from the next Games.

International Sporting Bodies Respond

All information concerning the athletes' trips was submitted to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) and the Ski Federation of Ukraine. This demonstrates the serious consideration international sports organizations are giving to the legality of such training activities. In the current global climate, decisions of this nature are increasingly shaping international sports policy.

The exclusion of these Russian athletes from the 2026 Olympics sends a strong message to the international community about the unacceptability of violating established legal and political norms. The position taken by the International Ski Federation highlights the intricate link between sports and global affairs, showing that athletes' actions can have profound consequences for their careers. This situation reinforces the critical importance of adhering to international standards within the sporting world.
