Consequences of the January 24 Russian Strikes
Russian attacks overnight on January 24 caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure in three districts of the Kyiv region, resulting in injuries and widespread power outages in the capital. The mass shelling damaged various facilities and caused serious problems with the city's electrical grid.
Damaged Infrastructure
In the Brovary district, 22 objects were damaged, including:
- 15 private residential houses
- 6 vehicles
- 1 warehouse
In the Boryspil district, 2 private houses were damaged, while a cultural institution building was hit in the Vyshhorod district. Four residents of the Kyiv region sustained injuries as a result of these attacks.
The most severe power supply situation is in Kyiv's Desnianskyi district, where tens of thousands of households were left without electricity. The company DTEK reported switching to emergency operating modes to address the problem. Ukraine's Minister for Communities and Territories Development, Oleksii Kuleba, also noted that a large shipment of generators from the EU is expected, with a new delivery scheduled to arrive in Ukraine within the next week. These attacks are part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which has intensified during the winter months.
This attack underscores once again the vulnerability of civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, which continues to suffer from military actions. By leaving people without electricity, such shelling creates additional hardships for the population, especially in winter. The arrival of generators from the European Union may help alleviate the power supply issues.
The duration of infrastructure restoration depends on many factors, including the security situation in the region.
