37 Killed in Russian Airstrike on Underground School in Komyshuvakha, Search Efforts Ongoing

Трагічна подія в Комишувасі: повітряний напад на прихований навчальний заклад забрав життя 37 людей, рятувальні роботи тривають.

Russian Airstrike Hits Underground School in Komyshuvakha

On November 2, 2026, a Russian airstrike targeted an underground school in the settlement of Komyshuvakha, located in the Zaporizhzhia region. This school was serving as a resilience center providing humanitarian aid. The attack resulted in the deaths of 37 people, while rescue operations are still underway. It is feared that up to 38 individuals remain trapped under the rubble, and 59 are currently reported missing. So far, the identities of 12 victims have been confirmed.

Ongoing Rescue and Recovery Efforts

Search and rescue teams, including canine units and mine rescue specialists from the State Emergency Service (DSNS), continue their work at the site. To date, the bodies of 31 victims have been recovered, with hopes that some of the missing may be among those found. Ivan Fedorov, co-chair of the Zaporizhzhia Defense Council, provided an update:

"There are still 59 people listed as missing. Some of them may be identified among those already recovered. Preliminary estimates suggest that around 38 people could still be trapped under the debris." - Ivan Fedorov

The strike involved at least nine guided FAB-3000 bombs. The underground school functioned as a crucial resilience hub in the area. Among the five survivors, four are currently receiving treatment at the Emergency Medical Care Hospital. Medical personnel report that a 22-year-old female patient is in critical condition with burns covering 81% of her body. The other survivors were admitted conscious.

Mikhailo Semikin, acting head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration, confirmed:

"The death toll from the Russian strike in Komyshuvakha has risen to 37 people." - Mikhailo Semikin

Rescue operations persist despite the challenging conditions, as the possibility remains that more victims are trapped beneath the wreckage.

This attack highlights the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region, where civilian structures such as schools are increasingly targeted. The use of underground schools as resilience points underscores the urgent need to protect civilians, yet these measures are insufficient against direct military assaults. Local authorities and emergency services continue prioritizing search and rescue missions alongside efforts to account for those still missing.

As the situation in Zaporizhzhia continues to develop, the recent guided bomb attack that claimed four lives, including children, highlights the ongoing dangers faced by civilians in the region. This tragic event underscores the urgent need for humanitarian assistance amidst escalating military actions.
